Amsterdam is a city and port in the western Netherlands, situated on the IJsselmeer and connected to the North Sea by the IJsselmeer. It is the Netherlands' capital as well as the country's main commercial and financial centre.The Netherlands' nominal capital, Amsterdam, is not the seat of government, which is The Hague. The royal family, for example, is only in residence on rare occasions at the Royal Palace in Amsterdam's Dam Square. The city does not have the same monumental architecture as other capitals. There are no large squares, triumphal arches, or majestic monuments to accommodate large parades. The narrow, busy streets of Amsterdam's old town, where most of the population still goes about its business, best represent the city's intimate character. Although there are vestiges of the glorious past—gabled houses, noble brick facades clad in sandstone, richly adorned cornices, towers and churches, and the music of carillons and barrel organs—the realities of modern city life frequently contradict this romantic picture.
